How to Prevent Frozen Taps in Winter

Eleena Brown November 20, 2024 Home Comments are off

Winter can wreak havoc on your plumbing, and frozen taps are one of the most common issues when temperatures drop – left unchecked, frozen taps can lead to burst pipes, water damage, and expensive repairs. But with a little preparation, you can keep your plumbing safe and functional, no matter how frosty it gets.

Insulate Pipes Properly

Exposed pipes are most at risk. Pipe insulation sleeves are an affordable way to add a layer of protection, and for added durability, pipes equipped with copper pipe fittings are a solid choice, as they hold up well against winter conditions when properly insulated. You can find some great options at Watkins and Powis.

Run the Taps

A small trickle of water can go a long way! When temperatures dip below freezing, keep taps slightly open; moving water is far less likely to freeze, and while it might add a bit to your water bill, it’s a small price to pay compared to a plumbing emergency.

Winterise Outdoor Taps

are especially prone to freezing so before the cold sets in, disconnect and drain all garden hoses, and cover taps with insulated covers. These simple additions are a protective barrier against freezing temperatures.

Seal Gaps and Drafts

Cold air creeping in through gaps around walls or windows can put your pipes at risk. Check for drafts near plumbing fixtures, and use caulk or weather-stripping to seal any trouble spots.

Keep Temperatures Consistent

Even if you’re away, don’t turn off the heat entirely. Set your thermostat to a minimum of 12-15°C to maintain a safe temperature for your pipes.

Install Frost-Proof Outdoor Taps

Consider upgrading to frost-proof outdoor taps, which are designed to prevent freezing by keeping water further inside your home where temperatures are warmer. Pairing these taps with copper pipe fittings ensures a durable, long-lasting solution for winter plumbing protection.

By following these tips, you can avoid the hassle of frozen taps this winter – a bit of effort now will save you from a chilly and expensive problem later.
