What are the differences between zinc and zinc nickel electroplating?

At their basic level, zinc and zinc nickel electroplating both protect steel from corrosion, but they’re not entirely interchangeable with each other, as we’ve got to consider things like the environment they’re used in and how much protection we need from them. Let’s take a closer look at the differences.

How the two coatings perform

Standard zinc plating works by sacrificing itself before the steel underneath begins to rust. It’s used a lot because it’s relatively inexpensive, which makes it a good choice for many everyday components.

Zinc nickel plating adds nickel to the coating, giving it much stronger resistance in harsh environments, and it performs better at higher temperatures and can even reduce galvanic problems when plated steel parts sit alongside aluminium.

That extra performance comes with more demanding quality control though, so the thickness alone isn’t enough; the zinc-to-nickel ratio is also really important. A specialist company like this one www.swmf.co.uk/surface-coatings/zinc-nickel-alloy-plating uses more advanced inspection equipment to confirm the coating is within the right spec.

Choosing between them

Zinc is often the practical choice when conditions are OK and budgets are tight. It’s also easier to inspect and has a long history of reliable use. Zinc nickel is better suited to demanding automotive, marine or industrial applications where failure would be really costly. However, it usually costs more upfront and needs that tighter process control.

So, the best choice really depends on your budget and what you need. Zinc offers that dependable, economical protection, while zinc nickel gives you a longer-lasting performance in tougher environments.
