The Sweater Through History

You would probably find that almost everyone on the planet owns at least one sweater. It is such a popular garment for comfort and versatility, for men, women and children. Therefore, it might surprise you to learn that sweaters only became a fashion item in the 1920s.

The first sweaters were sports related. They have origins in the guernsey worn by fishermen. For more details on irish sweaters women, visit a site like https://www.shamrockgift.com/aran-sweaters

Towards the end of the 19th century, activities like boating, tennis and golf were rising in popularity and required comfortable, flexible clothing.

By the 1920s and 30s, ‘jumpers’ were becoming all the rage. The Prince of Wales wore a sweater to play golf and Coco Chanel announced that the jumper should be a part of everyday attire. The humble sweater first appeared in American Vogue in 1927.

During the war years of the 1940s, knitting became an important part of the war effort, so this really was a boom time for the sweater. The fifties saw this boom continue with glamorous actresses sporting tight fitting knitwear over cone bras. Home knitting and mass production continued the trend.

The swinging sixties saw the sweater evolve into an anti-establishment symbol with the black polo neck beatnik style of The Beatles, for example. Skinny rib sweaters were the result of Mary Quant putting on a child’s jumper and within six months, all the young girls were wearing them.
