What Removals Insurance Covers (And What It Doesn’t)

Eleena Brown February 23, 2026 Home Comments are off

You might naturally assume that movers are fully insured whenever you book a removals company. Removals cover varies a lot, so it pays to check in advance of the day you move.

What removals insurance often covers

Your possessions should be protected from loss or damage that can happen during the move by most reputable firms. This may include:

Damage that occurs during the transportation of items, either when they are being carried, loaded, transported, or unloaded.

Damage during removals by your movers to furniture and boxes.

The quotation might be adequate in itself, but offer only a restricted or standard cover option (Frequently, weight-related instead of value).

Certain companies may have an additional ‘full value’ policy, where you choose the total of your items to provide more insurance. For advice from a Removal Company Cheltenham, visit //express-removals.co.uk/removal-companies-near-me/removals-cheltenham/

What it often doesn’t cover

Common exclusions include:

Anything you packed yourself (unless you are paying for ‘owner-packed’ cover)

Existing damage (scratches, broken fittings or mounting parts, and upholstery)

Glass, mirrors, and TVs, artwork or antiques (unless you declared them), fragile or high-risk items

Cash, jewellery, watches, and documents of value, as well as sentimental objects

Damage due to access: poor access, excess weather, and delays beyond the company’s control.

How to protect yourself

Request the policy wording and check before you book

Confirm the excess +/- the maximum payout

Whether this is “per item” or “per claim”.

Being covered helps provide peace of mind so you can get on with making item lists, packing, and taking photos of valuable items.

If in doubt, talk to your home insurance provider as well, as you might be covered when moving.
