Qualities of a solicitor
Law is a complex subject, so you will need a strong intellectual ability, along with good written and spoken communication skills. You will also need to have the dedication and commitment to what can be a long and complicated process towards qualification, while being willing to work long hours.
Qualifying
If your aim is to work in a London law firm like //www.forsters.co.uk, you will need to consider the route to qualification. Many take the university route of getting a law degree. To get on these courses, you will usually need at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 and above, and at least two A levels, although most courses require three. Taking the university route to becoming a solicitor usually takes about six years.
Another option to qualify through a solicitor apprenticeship. These take between three and six years. There are also options for those who have a degree in a subject other than law.
Whichever route you take, you will usually also need to take the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or SQE.
Suitability checks
The Solicitors Regulation Authority or SRA will carry out checks on the character and suitability of those applying to be solicitors. This checks for issues in your personal history that may make you unsuitable to be a solicitor. Common reasons for failing this are criminal convictions and cautions.
