Period garden ideas for a smaller space

Having a smaller garden may mean less space for plants and other features such as metal balustrades, but it does not have to be limiting. You just need to think more carefully about how you utilise every available inch.

Climbers and creepers

If you are trying to make the most of every inch of space, then plants such as wisteria and climbing roses that can spread up the walls can be an effective addition. Just be careful of those that are a bit too enthusiastic and end up overwhelming the other plants, or damaging the stonework.

Pots

Rather than having full flowerbeds, a few well-situated pots can help bring a garden to life with greenery. They can include some bushier shrubs and smaller trees that make the space feel fuller. Clip them neatly to avoid the impression that they are out of control.

Go unstructured

Mix grasses and flowers in different shades and heights for a wilder, more natural look. They can flow into each other, whilst plants such as hydrangea and foxglove can even spill out onto the path and make the smallest bed feel like a full garden.

Or add structure

Making use of different heights and textures does not just mean different plants. Raised beds, Metal Balustrades, changes in paving and decking and more all add points of difference to make the garden more interesting despite its restricted size.

There are many options to help you turn a small space into a beautiful, welcoming garden, one that meets your practical needs and where you enjoy spending time.
