There are many interesting places to explore in the world, and lots of these are small islands scattered throughout the seas. An example of this is the island of Jan Mayen – located in the arctic circle, this is a Norwegian owned island, but it has no permanent population and instead is home to a vast array of wildlife.
It is a volcanic island, and the Berenberg volcano is the prominent feature on the skyline of this tiny island. This is a great place to visit if you like to see the beautiful wild places that are still uninhabited – the island has no permanent residents and to visit you must obtain a pass from the Norwegian authorities.
There are tour companies that allow you to visit the island, and this is very dependent on the weather – its location makes it one of the more tricky and dangerous places to visit as the weather can be very dangerous. It is possible to sail to the island as long as you have permission, but you must be an experienced sailor and have completed the right training like this RYA powerboat level 2 www.solentboattraining.co.uk/rya-powerboat-courses/level-2
It is also worth being aware of the fact that there is no harbour on the island, so you can only use a small boat to land. The trip is well worth making if you want to see the wild arctic landscape and of course the many whales that can be found in the seas around this area, as well as the birds that live around the island.
